Thoughts of an elder writer-in-progress

on February 23, 2011

Being on the Pacific “ring of fire” one has to wonder when the PNW is going to get a good shaking.  Been in one in the 40’s in Seattle…and can remember a day in the 90s when I walked into a room and the rocking chair was rocking.  If you’ve never had the experience,  it is utterly indescribable that the so solid earth beneath is swaying/rolling/falling away underfoot and the immediate attack of panic and utter helplessness is shocking.  And if you’re not a believer in your God,  you will likely, and promptly, become one.

I’ve only ever felt very minor shaking, but even that was weird. It’s pretty sobering to look at the “ring of fire” map that’s been on the news lately — one could get paranoid, but then, what’s the point in that? Treat each day as a gift… treasure the moments… count our blessings. Sounds trite, but really, it’s how I hope to live.

We live on a fault line — had a small earthquake several years ago that actually did some minor damage to the house — but other than putting together an emergency supply box and updating its contents each year, we don’t give a lot of thought to the potential danger. I guess worrying about it wouldn’t change the outcome anyway.

I think you should just move to Cranbrook. We’re not on a fault line!
